What even carpet, anyway? Coca-Cola anymore? Chicken cordon bleu? Automatic ice? This fireside no fire? Outside beyond chain link, concrete cobble streets, someone burning small trash pile. Cool air from river—now coursing along under mostly paved-over canals culverts—settled over neighborhood. evening could smell all this. A dog barked. bell rang.She thought back village on coast where had first sent. place whose name would always remember like become own.
